Medical Mimics in Behavioral Health: When Symptoms Are Not Mental Health (3.0 Clinical Asynchronous)

CE Hours 3

About this course

Behavioral health professionals are often the first to observe changes in mood, cognition, behavior, sleep, energy, motivation, or functioning. While these symptoms may appear psychiatric, they can also be caused or worsened by medical conditions, medications, neurological disorders, infections, nutritional deficiencies, sleep disorders, substance use, or acute changes in physical health. This advanced clinical training helps social workers recognize when a mental health presentation may require medical evaluation or interdisciplinary consultation. Participants will learn how to identify medical red flags, ask targeted screening questions, avoid diagnostic overshadowing, and communicate concerns effectively within healthcare and behavioral health systems.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common medical conditions that may resemble or worsen psychiatric symptoms.
  • Recognize red flags suggesting medical, neurological, medication-related, or substance-related contributors.
  • Apply targeted screening questions when symptoms appear atypical, sudden, late-onset, fluctuating, or treatment-resistant.
  • Differentiate psychiatric symptoms from possible medical mimics using onset, course, context, and functional change.
  • Communicate medical concerns clearly and appropriately to interdisciplinary providers while maintaining social work scope of practice.

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Social Workers.
